First produced at the Barbican Theatre in London in 1985, the groundbreaking musical interpretation of Victor Hugo’s novel of the French Revolution proved an immediate hit.

Running for more than two decades in London and New York, as well as in numerous touring versions, Les Misérables defined the uplifting and epic musical with performances receiving standing ovations. In total, more than 65 million theater goers experienced the musical over the decades through nearly 3,000 productions spanning the globe.

In 2005, Les Misérables’ generation-defining reputation was cemented when it garnered more than 50 percent of the total votes in a BBC Radio 2 poll of the UK’s favorite musical. In recent years, it has continued to stay at the top of the public consciousness, through an unforgettable performance of I Dreamed a Dream by Susan Boyle and a 25th anniversary two-show staging of the musical in 2010 before 30,000 fans at the O2 Arena.
